Luxor day trip from Hurghada at a glance
Luxor lies inland on the Nile, and the trip from Hurghada is a road journey. The drive takes about four hours including a short break. That makes roughly eight hours on the road for a round trip, and checks or traffic can add to it. The time at the sites is what is left.
A long day can include Karnak and a selection of west bank stops. It cannot include everything. Karnak is on the east bank, and the Valley of the Kings, Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon are on the west bank. Switching banks costs extra time.

One day or two days
The trade-off is between time at the sites and time on the road.
| Format | What you can reasonably see | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Long day trip | Karnak plus one or two west bank stops, such as the Valley of the Kings | About eight hours of driving in total; the day is long and the visits are short |
| Private two-day trip with a hotel night | Both banks with more time per site | A different product from a bus day trip, so compare what each includes |
| Overnight stay in Luxor on your own | Two full days of choice | You organise the transfer and the tickets yourself |
For most travellers, the two-day format is the better choice if you want to see both Karnak and the Valley of the Kings without rushing. If you have only one day, pick Karnak and one west bank stop.
What fits into a long day
With a start from Hurghada, you reach Luxor after the long drive. Karnak is open from 06:00 to 17:00 and costs EGP 600 for foreign adults in 2026, with the open air museum included. The Valley of the Kings is open daily from 06:00 to 17:00 and costs EGP 750.
The Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari has three terraces and the same opening hours. Luxor Temple is open until 20:00 with a ticket of EGP 500, but a day trip rarely leaves time for it. Keep the list short, and choose the sites you want most.
Whether entry fees, lunch or a boat crossing are included depends on the offer. Ask before you pay, because the scope differs between bus, minibus and private trips. For the plan on the ground, see the one-day plan for Karnak and the Valley of the Kings.

Practical points for the road
Heat, safety advice and what to bring.
Overland travel advice
The German Foreign Office recommends local guidance on overland trips. It also notes that security checks can be stronger at night. Its current advice dates from 29 September 2026. A tour with a local guide fits this recommendation.
Heat
From June to August the daily highs average above 41 ยฐC. November to March is more comfortable. The weather page has the monthly values.
Pickup and return
Ask for the pickup time at your hotel and the expected time back. A late return is part of this format.
Water and clothing
Carry water, a hat and sun protection, since the days are long and hot for much of the year.
Photos
Private photography is free at archaeological sites, but flash is not allowed inside.
What to ask the operator
Day trips look alike on a booking page, but they differ in practice.
Departure and return times
Ask when you are picked up and when you are back at the hotel. The drive is the biggest part of the day.
Which sites are on the route
Karnak and the Valley of the Kings are the usual names. Ask for the stops in writing, including the crossing between the banks.
Tickets, lunch and boat
Entry fees, a meal or a boat transfer may or may not be included. Compare the price with the fees listed above.
Group size and language
Bus, minibus and private trips differ in both. Ask for the guide language before you book.
Time at each stop
With about eight hours of driving, time at the sites is short. Ask how long the group stays at each one.
