Karnak Temple opening hours

The site is open daily from 06:00 to 17:00, with no weekly closing day. Last entry is earlier than closing, at about 16:00, so plan to be at the gate by mid-afternoon at the latest. Check the current time when you book.

The hours matter more than they seem. Long-term averages put daily highs above 41 ยฐC from June to August, and a large part of Karnak is open ground with little shade. In the hot months, arrive at 06:00 and finish before midday. From November to March, when highs are about 23 to 30 ยฐC, any time of day works. The weather page has the monthly figures.

Luxor Temple, a separate site about 3 km to the south, is open until 20:00 every day. That makes it the better choice for a late afternoon. Karnak itself has an evening option too: the sound and light show has its own ticket.

How to buy Karnak tickets

Tickets are sold online and at the site. Online sales run through egymonuments.com. Visa and Mastercard are accepted on the website, in the app and at the counters. Tickets are non-refundable, so check the date and the number of people before you pay. Bring the document that matches your ticket category, especially for students.

A guide helps with the scale of the site, and many Luxor tours include Karnak. The tour price is not the ticket price. Check whether the entry fee is part of what you book, because some tours add it only as an option.

Children, students and discounts

  • Children: children under 6 enter free of charge. For older children there is no general half-price rule, so ask at the ticket counter.
  • Students: the student rate needs a valid student card. The upper age limit is 24.
  • Egyptians: Egyptians over 60 and Egyptians with a disability enter free.
  • Luxor Pass: a multi-site pass exists for Luxor and the West Bank. Check the current price and the sites it covers before you count on it.

For foreign visitors the Open Air Museum is part of the EGP 600 ticket, so you do not buy a second one at its gate.
