Luxor Airport to Karnak Temple at a glance
Luxor has an international airport, and the city is also a stop on the rail line that runs south along the Nile from Cairo toward Aswan. Karnak Temple stands on the East Bank, inside the city. You do not need a long transfer from the airport. Most people go to the hotel first and visit Karnak the next morning.
The drive from the airport to Karnak is about 10 to 13 km and takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the route and the traffic. There is no fixed public bus line to count on, so plan on a taxi or a pre-booked transfer. If you want the transfer bundled with a guide, look at Luxor tours before you book separately.

Ways to reach Karnak compared
Pick by where you start, not by price alone.
| Way | Best for | Check before you go |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked airport transfer | Arrival day, late flights, families | Pickup point, hotel address, whether waiting time is included |
| Taxi from the airport | Flexible arrivals | Taximeter on, or the price agreed before you get in |
| Taxi within Luxor | Hotel to Karnak, Karnak to Luxor Temple | Price and waiting time agreed first |
| Train from Cairo | Overnight travel, sleeper cabins | How foreign visitors buy tickets, the current timetable |
| Road from Hurghada | Day trips and private cars | Driving time of about 4 hours each way, local escort |
| Nile cruise | Combining sights with the river | Where the ship docks and how you reach Karnak from there |
For most visitors who land at Luxor Airport, a pre-booked transfer or a taxi with the price agreed first is the simplest start.

Taxi and transfer from Luxor Airport
The practical points that save money and time.
Pre-booked transfer
Agencies offer airport transfers to hotels and to the railway station in Luxor. Send your flight number and hotel address in advance, and ask whether the driver waits if your flight is late.
Taxi at the airport
The German Federal Foreign Office advises using a taxi with the meter running or agreeing the fare before you set off. No fixed Luxor tariff exists that you can rely on, so do not assume a price from a forum post.
Hotel first, Karnak later
Karnak opens at 06:00 and closes at 17:00, and the last entry can be earlier. A morning visit is cooler and quieter, so a late arrival is better spent at the hotel. Details are on the Karnak Temple tickets page.
From Karnak to Luxor Temple
The two temples are about 3 km apart. The ceremonial Avenue of Sphinxes links them over 2.7 km, but check which sections are open before you plan a walk. A short taxi ride is the safe option.
Avenue of Sphinxes โBy train, by road and by Nile ship
By train. Luxor is a railway destination on the Nile line between Cairo and Aswan, and sleeper trains run on the route. Ask your hotel or the station how foreign visitors buy tickets, and check the timetable for your date.
From Hurghada. The road trip takes about 4 hours including a short break. For long drives on the road the German Federal Foreign Office recommends a driver who knows the area, and night driving can bring extra checks. A private car or a tour with a driver is the usual alternative to doing it alone. See the day trip from Hurghada.
By Nile ship. A cruise is a way to arrive in Luxor, not a way into the temple. Berths, walking distances and transfers differ by ship, so do not assume you dock close to Karnak. Ask your operator for the transfer to the temple, or read the Nile cruise guide.
