Luxor hotels: choose the bank first
The Nile divides the sights, so it also divides the choice of where to stay. Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple stand on the East Bank, about 3 km apart. The Valley of the Kings, the temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon are on the West Bank. Hotels exist on both sides, and the right one depends on what you plan to do first.
This page gives you the logic, not a ranking. Prices and availability change by date, so compare current rates on the platform you book through. Before you decide, read the things to do in Luxor to see how many days you need, and look at Luxor tours if you want pickup and a guide included.

East Bank or West Bank: how it changes your days
Where you sleep sets the length of your first ride each morning.
| Your plan | East Bank stay | West Bank stay |
|---|---|---|
| Karnak at opening time | Short ride in the city | Cross the river first |
| Luxor Temple in the evening | Short ride back to the hotel | Plan the return crossing |
| Karnak sound and light show | Short ride before and after | Plan the return crossing |
| Valley of the Kings, from 06:00 | Cross the river first | Shorter ride on the West Bank |
| Balloon flight, start site on the West Bank | Ask the operator about pickup | Ask the operator about pickup |
For most first visits that centre on Karnak, a stay on the East Bank keeps the early starts short. Choose the West Bank if the tombs and a balloon flight matter more to you than the temples in town.

Where to stay in Luxor: what to ask before you book
A short list that matters more than the star rating.
The ride to Karnak
Ask how long the drive to Karnak takes and whether the hotel arranges a driver. The Corniche is the riverfront road, and being on it does not tell you how far you are from a given temple.
Early breakfast
Karnak and the Valley of the Kings open at 06:00. Ask whether the hotel serves breakfast early or packs it, so you can start before the heat.
Crossing the river
Most guests visit both banks during a stay. Ask how the hotel handles the crossing and whether it still works late in the evening, for example after the sound and light show.
Airport and train transfers
Ask whether the hotel arranges an airport transfer, and what the arrival process looks like for a late flight. The airport is about 10 to 13 km from Karnak. More in the Luxor Airport to Karnak guide.
Cancellation and rates
Check the current rate, the cancellation terms and any extra charges directly with the provider you book through. These change by season and date.
Staying on the West Bank
West Bank stays suit visitors who want the tombs and a balloon flight at the start of the day. The balloon start site is on this bank near Hatshepsut's temple, and flights leave between 05:00 and 08:00 depending on the season. You will cross the river for Karnak and the evening sights, so plan the return at night.
If you plan Karnak and the Valley of the Kings on the same day, a driver or a guided tour takes care of the crossing and the timing. See Karnak and the Valley of the Kings in one day.

Other ways to sleep in Luxor
A ship is also a bed.
A Nile cruise
A cruise ship works as both transport and hotel. Where the ship docks sets your transfer to Karnak, so do not assume it is close. Ask the operator before you book. For routes and ships, read the Nile cruise guide.
More choice and area notes

Travel notes
Check the advisory of your own government before you book. The German Federal Foreign Office has listed a partial travel warning for Egypt since 29 September 2026, and the US State Department advisory of 15 July 2025 is Level 2.

Luxor hotels: frequently asked questions
Should I stay on the East Bank or the West Bank?
For Karnak and Luxor Temple, the East Bank means shorter rides. For the Valley of the Kings and a balloon flight, the West Bank does. Either way you will cross the river at least once, so ask your hotel how that works.
Do I need a hotel next to Karnak?
No. Karnak is within the city, and a short drive reaches it. What matters more is an early start, because the temple opens at 06:00.
How many nights should I book in Luxor?
Two nights cover the main sights if you give one day to each bank. A third night allows a balloon flight, the museums and the evening show without rushing.
Can I book a hotel with a tour that includes pickup?
Some tours include hotel pickup. Check the pickup area in the offer and confirm that your hotel is covered, especially on the West Bank.
Is this the official Karnak website?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Supreme Council of Antiquities, a hotel group, a museum or the site operator.
